The family of Mr. Willie Barfield a Glendale Heights man
who was killed in a fatal hit and run accident November
2, 2005, has posted a $15,000 reward for information
leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver of the
vehicle involved in that accident. This is in addition to
the DuPage Crime Stoppers offer of up to $1,000 for
information resulting in the arrest and the filing of
criminal charges against the offender.
On Wednesday morning, November 2, 2005, at 2:10
a.m., the Glendale Heights Police Department
responded to a report of a man lying in the roadway in
the 1900 block of Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights.
Responding officers discovered Willie E.
Barfield, age 41, of Glendale Heights, lying in the
roadway at that location. He was pronounced dead at
the scene.
Preliminary indications are Mr. Barfield was walking
southbound in the 1900 block of Glen Ellyn Road south
of Army Trail Road along the DuPage County East
Branch Forest Preserve when he was struck by an
unknown vehicle traveling northbound on that road.
That vehicle is believed to have sustained body
damage, and is believed to be maroon in color.
Investigators from the Glendale Heights Police
Department are still looking for the vehicle.
The family of Mr. Barfield continues to grieve his loss
and is seeking the public's assistance in helping the
Glendale Heights Police Department and the DuPage
County State's Attorney's Office in identifying the fatal
hit and run vehicle and driver. Again the family has
offered $15,000 for information leading to the arrest
and conviction of the driver who struck Willie Barfield.
If anyone has any information about this accident, or
witnessed this accident, please call the Glendale
Heights Police Department at 630-260-6070 or the
Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-424-9119.
Dumb Criminal Acts
A 33 year-old man entered a Leather &
Firearms store brandishing a .38-caliber
semiautomatic handgun and announced
his intention to rob the store. He
threatened to shoot anyone who got in his
way.
Having apparently failed to notice the
police car parked in front of the gun shop
when he walked in (true!), the offender
found himself confronted by a uniformed
officer and an armed clerk, who ordered
him to drop his gun. The offender opened
fire instead, drawing a fatal volley of shots
from the clerk and the policeman, both of
whom survived the shootout unharmed.
HOAX
The following letter has been traveling the
internet via e-mail. Per the Wheaton Police
Department this is nothing but a hoax.
Subject: Fw: Target in Wheaton...very
scary
Does anyone know if this is true?
THIS WAS SENT TO ME FROM A DEAR
FRIEND....who got it from someone in this
area.
I shop at that Target and know that area
so well. It is an exclusive and wealthy
area across the street from St. Francis
High School in DuPage County, Roosevelt
Road & County Line Road, that is 97%
white. What a shock it was to receive this
email from another local. Frankly, I would
not have been so smart. If an elderly lady
had asked me for help, I probably would
have gone over and been kidnapped.
Now I am wiser. It is difficult to live your
life with such skepticism, but it has
become a matter of life or death.
This is not one of those dire email
warnings from a stranger; this happened
in my neighborhood. Take heed!
Ladies: Please be aware. And pass it on if
you think this will help someone. This was
passed on to me by a friend.
HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED
Sunday afternoon around 5 pm I headed
into Target in Wheaton, IL (where crime is
VERY RARE and mostly it is with bike's
being stolen!!). It was still light outside
and I parked fairly close to the entrance.
As I got out of my car and began walking
towards Target, an older lady shouted to
me from the passenger seat of a car about
30 feet away from me... "ma'am you must
help me, help me please, help me
ma'am!" I looked at her in the eyes and
started to walk towards her when all of a
sudden I remembered an email my mom
sent me a week or two ago (one of those
forwards about safety that you generally
delete, or at least I do) about rapists and
abductionist using elderly people to lure
women in. I paused, memorized the
license plate and immediately headed into
Target to get a manager to come help this
lady, just in case something was up. While
the woman manager headed out there I
kept a close watch just because I was
curious what was wrong with the lady and
wanted to be sure nothing happened. The
target lady got very close to the old
woman in order to help her do something.
Just then the back door flies open and a
large man with a stocking cap on jumps
out and sticks a gun to the lady's stomach
as he shoves her into the back of the car.
I yelled call 911 several times and just as
I was saying that a policeman who
happened to be on the other side of the
parking lot and saw the entire thing
happen, raced over to the car. He was able
to stop the car and arrest the male AS
WELL AS THE old lady, who was involved
in the scheme.
By God's grace everyone was alright,
including myself, although I think we were
both very shaken up. Like many of you, I
would not in a million years have left an
elderly person who was yelling for help if
it weren't for the email I had read last
week. So, I wanted to pass this along so
you all can be aware and remember that
you really can't trust anyone these days.
You just never know when something like
this could happen. I would have never
dreamed it to happen to me.
