A warning to the public against an ongoing scheme
involving jury service. The public needs to be aware
that individuals identifying themselves as U.S. court
employees have been telephonically contacting citizens
and advising them that they have been selected for
jury duty. These individuals ask to verify names and
Social Security numbers, then ask for credit card
numbers. If the request is refused, citizens are then
threatened with fines.
If you have already been contacted and have already
given out your personal information, please monitor
your account statements and credit reports, and
contact your local FBI office at (312) 421-6700, your
local Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
Cool Crime Prevention Product
Australia's multi billion dollar equipment rental industry
has turned to futuristic spray on micro identification
dots in an effort to stem the theft of items ranging
from garden furniture to bulldozers. The dots, which
are smaller than a grain of sand and difficult to see
with the naked eye, each carry a unique laser-etched
identification code that can be read with ultra violet
detection equipment used by police forces. The unique
identification information contained on each dot can be
matched by police with a database maintained by
DataDot Home & Business.
A twenty-four-year old Texas man broke into a
residence, stole a television set and made a clean
getaway. He was arrested a few hours later reentering
the premises - he had forgotten to steal the
television's remote control and came back for it.
A Message From Chairman Hanlock
The weapon which solved three murders could still be
out there, the home invader responsible for more than
16 break-ins could still be on the loose and the bank
robber who robbed the Carol Stream and Schaumburg
banks could still be robbing. However they're not.
Why? Because informers called DuPage County Crime
Stoppers. The tips that led to the arrests in these
cases, and many others, could stop coming in if money
isn't donated to help keep the phone line open and the
rewards available.
Crime Stoppers serves as a clearinghouse for
anonymous informers and pays rewards, usually
between $100 and $1,000 depending on the severity of
the crime. After 16 years, Crime Stoppers will be
scaling back its program. The not for profit all
volunteer organization is
struggling to maintain a minimal service as donations
and the replenishing of its all volunteer staff has
deminished tremendously throughout the years. A
worst-case scenario would be
ending the program. However we're hoping at the very
least to maintain minimal services. We just
haven't been able to raise enough money to keep
operating the way we were.
Most of the tips taken by Crime Stoppers are about
drugs, drug dealing and where the drugs are being sold.
The next top calls are about possible sightings of
fugitives. Does Crime Stoppers solve a lot of cases?
No, compared to the overall scene. But it just takes
that one tip to break a case. The financial burden of
Crime Stoppers has now fallen upon the DuPage County
community. To learn more about Crime Stoppers, go to
www.dupagecrimestoppers.com. To make a donation
please send it to DuPage County Crime Stoppers - PO
Box 174, Glen Ellyn Illinois 60138-0174. To volunteer
for Crime Stoppers please use the contact section of
the web site.
What Has Crime Stoppers Done For Me Lately?
Crime Stoppers is an extremely effective crime fighting
concept that solves crime and keeps our streets safe.
Crime Stoppers is a resource of all the law enforcement
departments both locally and internationally and shows
an average conviction rate of 95 percent. Crime
Stoppers saves law enforcement agencies thousands
of
dollars in investigation time by offering a 24/7 hotline
to
which callers can report crime anonymously. Calls to
Crime Stoppers assist in putting police on the right
track by identifying individuals who are responsible for
committing crimes. Today there are some 1,200 Crime
Stoppers programs in 20 countries, including the United
States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South
Africa, Central America and the Caribbean. On an
accumulative basis since 1976 tips to Crime Stoppers
have been responsible for the arrests of around
600,000 individuals and led to the seizure of close to
$7
billlion in stolen property and illicit drugs. Crime
Stoppers does work and the DuPage County Crime
Stoppers is in need of your donation in order to
replenish their reward and general fund. Please help by
sending your donations to P.O. Box 174 Glen Ellyn,
Illinois 60138-0174.
